Whether you want a sheer finish that allows the natural appearance of your skin to shine through, or you want good coverage but an imperceptible feel on the skin, there’s a brilliant lightweight foundation formula to suit.
All our favourites give a natural finish and are particularly good for dry and/or mature skin types, who may find heavier formulas cake or settle into pores and lines. If you’re oilier skinned, you may want to look for one that has a matte finish, as they will last longer on the skin. We’ve featured these here too.
We prefer to apply lightweight formulas straight from our fingertips for a sheer layer, but these would also work well with a stippling brush or damp sponge. We suggest applying them to the back of your hand rather than straight on to your fingers, as the thinner formulas may run between them.
You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.
This is a real “does what it says on the tin” product. It has a glowy, moisturising finish that smoothes out imperfections in texture and masks some redness (you can build it up where you need it) and is brilliant for dry skin. We found we got better coverage applying it with our fingers than with a brush as a lot of it absorbed into the bristles.

This is a clear formula with beads of colour suspended in it, which burst on contact with the skin. It feels cool and refreshing on application, and it’s definitely glowy, with an almost wet-look finish. We love it applied with fingers or with the brush provided; the key is to apply directly to the face, not to the back of your hand first, otherwise the colour will be wasted. This is a perfect lightweight formula for wearing on holiday.

Surratt’s dew drop launched last year to much attention and, while it’s definitely at the luxury end of the price spectrum, it has earned a place in our roundup. It has an unusual dropper-style bottle, with a soft, squeezy “button” on the bottom of the cartridge, so you turn it upside down and push to dispense. It’s incredibly hydrating, the finish is luminous and doesn’t settle into fine lines, making it perfect for mature skin.

Giorgio Armani’s much-raved-about luminous silk foundation is completely weightless on the skin and feels plumping rather than drying. It stays put through a long day in the office without looking cakey or settling into lines. It’s a perfect “your skin but better” foundation, giving you a flawless finish without looking flat.

Stila is a brand with lots of brilliant products that somehow manages to slip beneath the radar most of the time. This thin, lightweight formula is comfortably cushioning on dry skin and gives buildable coverage without feeling heavy. We love the satin, natural finish.
